We need to relearn feedback. We think it's natural and that we can do it, but it's also a skill that can be grown and it's one you want to grow in your team. Folletto #WCEU

We think feedback works but it can be just regression to the mean Folletto #wceu

We say "negative" feedback but let's reframe it to feedback that you know what to do with. "Positive" feedback is confirmation feedback - keep doing what you're doing. Folletto #WCEU

Undermining feedback - feedback given to make ourselves feel better. Natural, but work to change - give supportive feedback instead. This is radical candor. Rude does not mean candid (or sincere!) You can be sincere without being rude - care about the person Folletto #WCEU

Communication styles differ, when giving feedback adapt to the communication style of the person you are speaking to. Also consider language barriers and cultural differences. Assume misunderstandings happen. Clarify the definitions you're using. Folletto #WCEU

Ask if someone wants feedback! Ask for feedback - be explicit about the kind of feedback you want. What kind of level of feedback do you want? Detailed or structural? Allows better and more efficient communication. Ask specific questions without priming. Folletto #WCEU

Anonymous feedback shouldn't happen in a good environment in a good team. Normally not very effective. Want an environment where you can have open discussion. Sometimes it's useful, via proxy or via a tool. But use anonymous feedback as little as possible. Folletto #WCEU

Asking gives power to the person you are giving feedback to. It’s more likely to be taken well. Folletto #wceu

Timing is important, as close to the event as possible. Be specific, don't be general. Give the right feedback at the right time - noone likes rework. Folletto #WCEU

If something good happened, you don't want to kill it. Give someone the time to enjoy the moment! Don't immediately follow with "that was good, but...". Be clear what assumptions you are coming from - make them explicit. Folletto #WCEU

Ask the stupid question. Often teams think everyone "should" know and they don't clarify. Don't be afraid of it - be proud that you had the courage to! Folletto #WCEU

The brilliant Folletto is debunking the shit sandwich. It’s not about the concept, it’s about the time. Great teams give 6x as much confirming feedback as constructive.

Build a safe zone when this discussion can happen. Pull people up with confirmation feedback, push people with adjustments. Say sorry, give agency (why asking is important), show vulnerability. Folletto #WCEU

When receiving feedback, breath! Separate the personal from the objective, then focus on the objective. Split the solutions they are giving from the problems they are surfacing. Check their assumptions. If they don't do it, you need to do the work yourself. Folletto #WCEU

If it's hard feedback, pair up and ask someone else too review your take. Are you taking it too personally? Seek out an objective perspective to grow yourself and improve. Folletto #WCEU

In OSS, everyone can come in and do "drive by" feedback. Take a deep breath (or three). Approach it like research, analyse it in a quantative and qualative way. Hard to check assumptions, but you can review which group they represent - blogger / dev / biz owner. Folletto #WCEU

Sometimes you are not the right person to answer. There might be a more informed person to do it who has a better perspective - ask them. When people give you feedback they give you time, so make sure you acknowledge everyone. Folletto #WCEU

“Don’t feed the trolls” only works in the micro, it doesn’t work at scale. Our tools don’t handle coordinated efforts to attack well. Folletto #wceu
