    1. It is deeply annoying to me how many people position diversifying a team as rocket science, and not just hard work that they don't want to bother doing.

    IMO any engineering hiring process that results in <20% women* is fundamentally broken. Measuring women hires is a metric, but should not be the goal. My policy: measure women, because you can. Everything you do, do for all under-indexed folks (and ideally everyone).

      Anyway that any hiring process with poor outcomes (lack of diversity can be a sign of broader problems) is fixable with some time and attention. Some advice: - Start by measuring everything & figure out where your dropoff is. - Build your pipeline. - Have empathy for candidates.

        I will write a longer blog post about this at some point, but I have run this process repeatedly and iterated on it. Now on round #4. 100% it is possible, if you're willing to do the work consistently and over a long period.
