  27. …in reply to @LittleMxSurly
kimhorne also having lived in oz, these conversations about women in tech are not quite as far along as in the us/canada. (uk imo worse)
  28. …in reply to @LittleMxSurly
kimhorne UK is mostly "we had a female PM", but don't consider the way she is talked about. I've found that women here don't expect more.

marcprecipice oh that was dozy of me, sorry. Yes I don't use it much either, but I think a lot of the harassment women experience is...
  95. …in reply to @marcprecipice
marcprecipice ... Not obvious to men. The experience on sites like ok Cupid is vastly different for example. Also twitter, though...
  96. …in reply to @marcprecipice
marcprecipice ... That is getting more raised awareness of. Really any platform for communication is also used for harassment.

  103. …in reply to @skamille
skamille is this career limiting? As we look more to people's online work to decide whether to hire them, implications if drive women away.

  110. RT skamille: catehstn it is troubling to me that women get shut out of spaces, even spaces I consider to be wholly vapid like quora
  111. …in reply to @skamille
skamille true on twitter too though, shanley was tweeting earlier about men harassing her with real name, company etc.
  112. …in reply to @skamille
skamille this is the disconnect, men can behave how they like with their identity on display, women can't display signs of female-ness.
  113. …in reply to @skamille
skamille yeah I find it hard to calibrate knowing more with my general feelings of increased burn out/despondency.

  542. Watching the eniac programmers documentary Google london today! I will be live tweeting it.
  543. Conducting fascinating social experiment, when advertised it to all of engineering I neglected to mention the first programmers were women.
  544. Eniac was built to calculate missile trajectories. Affected by weather. Army needed thousands of such calculations.
  545. Army needed male mathematicians but they had gone to war. "The army took a deep breath and deigned to hire women."
  546. I'm so happy Kathy could join us today and we could see this. She is amazing, and I love the documentary!
  547. Eniac was an ambitious experiment built to speed up the calculations. Built with vacuum tubes. They took a chance, happened to work.
  548. Women knew very little about the eniac. It was built in secret. When almost finished, realized they needed someone to program it.
  549. Picked 6 women out of 100 to program machine they weren't allowed to see. Figured out how to program it from machine diagrams.
  550. "We had no idea what we were doing" "we learned to do it from the back first" - broke the equation down into steps the eniac could follow.
  551. Eventually allowed to see the machine. Saw a black computer, 8ft tall, 80ft long. 3 sides of a big room. Had never seen anything like it.
  552. 18,000 vacuum tube, if something went wrong in one nothing would work. Have to find it. Had to connect cables, and 3000 switches.
  553. Now what used to take a week was solved in seconds. Laid the groundwork for programmers to come.
  554. "We were sure this machine could do whatever we wanted it to do"
  555. War ended in 1945, eniac wasn't quite finished. Used for a secret problem from Los alamos - think it was the trigger for hydrogen bomb.
  556. On the first demo, lights off calculated trajectory faster than firing it "There was a huge gasp... and the Information Age had started"
  557. Army event, dinner. Women weren't invited. Public never knew what they did, only the team. Never got the credit they deserved.
  558. Overlooked for decades, even by historians. Historians mostly men, connections to hardware. Didn't realize. Came out when women did history.
  559. Kathy found pictures taken of the eniac with women in them. Wanted to find out who they were. Jean bartik. From Missouri, to programming.
  560. "The world needs to know who it's pioneers were, and those pioneers were both women and men."
  561. Most inspiring about the eniac programmers? The way they lit up when they talked about programming the eniac.
  562. Still a number of barriers to women, that field of software was started by women is something that gives us all a bit of extra confidence.

  669. No longer sharing articles that claim to make general observations, but only feature men (common in articles on VC, startups, tech).
  670. …in reply to @catehstn
Like the one about men being depressed doing startups, today how a dude gets to work with all his bros, holds out for someone he "knows".
  671. lol @ spam comment that contains the phrase "I possess a google" - can we really "possess" such a thing my friend? Can we?

shanley keeping up with the kardashians. It's the furthest thing from day to day surrounded by dudes wearing tech company tshirts.

skamille I think they overstate their conclusions. What people feel comfortable about sharing is not the same as how they feel.

  685. …in reply to @undefined
TeraKristen some of their numbers were really off, e.g. the average post is actually the average blogger on a post.
  686. …in reply to @undefined
TeraKristen and the conclusion that you should do daily posts of 6k words just seems bizarre.
  687. lccarson if only you were in London. There's a lecture on Victorian sex this week, and as you are not I will have to go alone.

  691. …in reply to @N4td
N4td that is good. I have a good manager now, and it has changed everything. Left office in tears 3x this year - used to be 3x a week.
  692. …in reply to @N4td
N4td And when I did he actually dealt with things, which has been a revelation.

  704. …in reply to @undefined
juliepagano it's just ignorant. I'm tired of men who essentially evangelize Straight While Male privilege as a life style.
  705. …in reply to @undefined
juliepagano it's everywhere. This year I watched a talk about SWMP that purported to be about education. Endless blog posts everyday.
