My friend: “you can call me at 2am” Me: “I’ll give you the passcode to my house, you can let yourself in and I’ll be with you when I wake up.”

I was talking to someone about public speaking today and observed they had watched me give my worst talk this year and how I had struggled with it. They said, “I don’t remember that, I remember people being engaged and asking questions.” It was helpful to hear that 😍🥰💕

My guest room is finally done! Art from Japan (and somewhere else? Maybe Canada), blanket from Israel, lamp from Iceland. It’s so pretty I am so pleased 🥰

I would like to introduce you to the bathroom of my dreams. Storage space!! Rain shower!! TWO shower shelves! A corner foot shelf! Heated floor!

My theory is that if raccoons had been domesticated instead of dogs women would have expected more from their partners and lives sooner. Raccoons! Cleaner, smarter, more independent, more helpful (they like to be washed! They will help you wash things!) 🦝🦝🦝

a lot of cis people use 'learning someone's pronoun' as a copout from doing the important internal work of actually reconsidering their impression of the person's gender

Good news I am not really an American so even if they won’t pay for it I won’t die or have to declare bankruptcy.

Today is the first day I’ve had off since LAST FEBRUARY (when I started house hunting) where I don’t have a bunch of Domestication to do and oh my god I feel free now I see the extent of the psychic weight I’ve been carrying… the relief… more things are now possible 😭
-
Yesterday I spoke to insurance—they are going to pay at least some of the thing I have to go to the UK to get. Which... yay should happen in the next month or so? This whole thing has been so SLOW but finally I feel like it’s moving. The builder assured me he’s nearly done, too.

Hahaha yeah but pls don’t book a flight until my actual bedroom is finished 😂

one reason i love and identify with raccoons so much is they always seem to be simultaneously having a great deal of fun and in the grips of a looming panic attack x.com/raccooons/stat…

Still believe Sydney is the most beautiful city in the world.

Everyone loves SpaceX, and thinks of Elon as the genius founder that invents new types of rockets that are cheaper, faster, more efficient. It's fun to think of it as SpaceX versus NASA, or Silicon Valley vs Aerospace. But let's talk about D&I, and logs. Logs as in timber. 🌲

It never fails to amaze me given how long I’ve been in tech, and what I’ve achieved in that timeframe... that some people expect me to be a pushover. (These people tend not to like me very much 🦝😇💅🏼💋)

Well thank fuck that’s over.

But it was hard to be split across things, to feel that everything is temporary and not to have a real “home”. So I’m excited to have one again on devex for at least the first half of 2019. Switching teams inhibits my ability to write, but I started contributing to quartz.

Today I filled in FORMS for healthcare and I have to send them to an unspecified place so tomorrow I have to make ANOTHER PHONE CALL because the last time after two attempts they gave me the wrong info and then I get to wait and see if they will pay and oh my god.
-
Code is fine it’s people that are the problem. This is the kind of thinking that lands you in management 😂😭

Today I resolved the crack-womble-recycling situation, learned where the recycling is, went to the gym, wrote a blog post, organized my office (or at least my desk and a bunch of paper, the shelves aren't yet finished), and decided where to hang all my art 💪😎
-
2018 was a brutal year for me. I spent most of the year dealing with a fractured shoulder. I bought a house and gutted it, which was stressful and expensive and is still not finished. Friends came and went - including one who died and who I still miss.

It reminded me people often don’t know what we’ve struggled with unless we tell them. Similarly, you don’t know what went into what looked “easy” from the outside. It’s always worth telling people if you thought something was good - they may need to hear it more than you know 💋

Thanks babe 💜

For now maybe I can be proud that... I made so many fucking phone calls. I supported my peers and helped us become more of a team. I went to the gym even when it hurt. I kept buying myself flowers. I unpacked all boxes. I have people who love me who showed up when I needed them.
-
Actually one last thing: I had no interior designer and I never even looked at Pinterest. This house is pure Cate 💋

Ooh I really enjoyed that one.

At work I ended up running FIVE different teams. I left the mobile team to run Jetpack engineering, spent some time on http://Wordpress.com, worked on rolling out Gutenberg (both .com and core) and ended up lead of “devex” which I don’t currently even know how to describe.

I read a book on attachment styles this week and OMG TOO REAL. Me: “So apparently I am both anxious an avoidant?!” MULTIPLE FRIENDS: “duh, I could have told you that” (Apparently leaving the country as a solid answer to most problems is a dead giveaway idk)

This is why you should always pay attention not just to the words people use and the things they claim, but the way they treat people, especially when disagreed with, and especially on different axes of oppression. Particularly trans and PoC. kthxbai.

No no I was not in an enclosed space with the animal. It arrived and left with my friend and we were in a park with a lot of other animals and humans should the animal have decided to eat another living creature.
-
People often complain about “lack of vision” which usually means lack of strategy - how does day to day work roll up into proximate objectives that move towards higher level things that are too far from the day to day to be relatable? What does communicating that well look like?
-
I’m not saying these problems aren’t problems - they are, and pervasive. But building depth on what good looks like helps better critique, work towards better, and/or look for better elsewhere. Personally, I am less stressed by situations I understand (even if I disagree), too.
-
I was going to write more then I realized it was sufficient as is

-
How awful a person do you have to be to think like this?! There is no “both sides” or “be reasonable” argument here, TERFs are pure, vicious hate.
-
The dirty secret of D&I is that some people learn the language and use it to construct some morally unassailable hill for themselves to enact an all-too-similar pattern of oppression from.
-
Matchbox Twenty “unwell” and “last beautiful girl”. If anyone needs me brb I will be listening to m20 all day.
-
Also people trying to be “reasonable” and “see both sides” here is part of the problem. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt here and assume you are trying to see some kind of good intention or valid concern… but there is plenty of data to show it’s not there.
-
Highlight of my day, I want to be this person in all of your lives 🥰

Because I know you all enjoy my job title tweets, I have (another) new team, and my latest job title is "🤖👑" 🦝
-
We get frustrated with poorly handled change management, but do we know what it means to do it well? What the stages of change are? Common pitfalls and failure modes? Understanding that gives critique more depth, and more hope for a path through.
-
We know when we have a bad manager, but do we know what a good one looks like? Do we clearly communicate work and manage up? Or are we just stuck because they won’t meet us where we are at?
-
Since this TERF-ey bathroom bullshit upset one of my friends last week, your regular reminder: - It’s not (just) about bathrooms it’s about excluding people from society. - This is not theoretical, these are real people just trying to live their lives.

No idea why I’ve been invited to this, but I do plan on making some changes to my personal brand in 2019: - move from 💜 to 🖤, it better captures my ability to ❤️ - balancing out love of 🦝 with hate of 🐬 for a more nuanced persona - more 🐧 - unapologetically 👩🏻💻 - embrace 🤖

Genuine message from one of my friends about which I will NOT go into an anxiety spiral 😂

Today I drove(!) to suburbia(!) to spend time with my friend and her vicious animal(!) I think we can all agree that this is an act of deep love and affection 💕
-
💯 people have to realize that it’s not enough to not be saying this shit, they have to be kind. Like someone could have said something supportive to my friend, instead they just let her angst and feel uncomfortable and eventually leave.

We can clearly see when a team is pale and male, but do we know what it looks like to have a truly diverse team where every perspective is _included_? It is easy to question and show failure because most companies are failing. But the work of inclusion is a learnable skill.

He had to fill in one fucking form so I can have way less invasive surgery in the UK and it took well over a week, referred to me as “mr” and pushed his overly dramatic plan that I have already rejected. Such a fucking cutter. And also an asshole.

If raccoons had been domesticated instead of dogs, women would have had higher standards for the creatures that shared their lives earlier. Feminism would be years ahead of where it is today actually. Don’t @ me I know I am right and there is no need to discuss this.
-
If you know anything about being trans, you will know the internal struggle and dysphoria are difficult enough and why would you want to do anything other than support people going through that? If not, well trans people are still human beings, which TERFs seem able to forget.
-
*All* WordPress sites are supported in the apps, however some functionality core to a good mobile experience cannot be provided without a central service, (notifications). Jetpack allows us to give that experience to people who are not hosted on http://WordPress.com.
-
This is what I'm terrified of! 😡 The post has gone viral because a woman is using a cane AND is on her phone. People are saying she is faking being blind! 95% of people who are registered as blind or partially sighted can see something. Not to mention assistive technology...
-
Haha yes!! Well if you come to Ireland...
-
All the lighting is hue so I create a soft sunset in orange and pink and blue (matching the color scheme of the rooms) each evening, it’s very soothing. I hate bright lights when I’m winding down. The Sonos speakers (2 up 2 down) play music throughout the house at all times.
-
There are a couple of reasons for that, and we're working to change it by showing up at contributor day and giving talks, but we also are working to have a broader reach in the mobile development community, too. We think there is a lot for us to contribute - and learn.
-
By the inimitable @duretti
-
I did not enjoy being without twitter for a day, but I was fine. But part of cis woman privilege is being allowed to exist in society, with a lower level of and less dangerous street harassment, and a reasonable expectation of being able to use the bathroom when out and about.

Domesticating 🏠 https://photo.cate.blog/2019/01/domesticating-%f0%9f%8f%a0/…
-
Idk what I’m supposed to do with these impossible assignments my therapist gives me. “Have fun”, “do things that make you feel good about yourself”?!? Where’s “cry”, “eat only breakfast foods” and “shut out people who care about you”? I am so much better at those.
-
There is a subset of women, for whom mumsnet (which should perhaps be renamed to TERFsnet) is their online home. These women call themselves “feminists” but they hate trans women. They are transphobic, but far more so about trans women than trans men. They are HATEFUL.
-
The aesthetic of the ground floor is supposed to be evocative of a sunset (hall and kitchen) moving into night (living room). We took out all the doors to make it open with the grey creating the continuity. The bright colors offset the stark minimalism of a white kitchen.

With the previous Woo app, people couldn't login with username+password but had to use a key. This was a horrible UX, which we decided not to replicate in the new ones. We require Jetpack because there is no reasonable mobile Woo UX without a central auth service & notifications.

The WP mobile apps are also part of the *mobile* OSS community, often used in benchmarking (as a large, OSS application). We have several libraries used by other applications, our media library is particularly popular. You can see all our code on GitHub. https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/…

Anyway TERFs got me put on time out for a day, but they can’t stop me continuing to try to be a decent human being so my message to them is: fuck you, I’m not going to shut up about how wrong and harmful you are. Or you know, the need to drive on the correct side of the road.
-
But yes, the reality of OSS development in 2019 is that most contributors are paid, which means that most contributors are paid by businesses to work on things that align with their business goals. The majority of contributions to the apps are by people employed by Automattic.
-
Tbh increasingly I feel like twitter only added any kind of abuse tooling to protect the key demographics of Nazis and TERFs. The rest of us are just supposed to get fucked.
-
I lolsob want this but in all seriousness have you tried bumble? Also come to Ireland and I'll have dimsum with you 💋

« It turns out that trust is in fact earned in the smallest of moments. It is earned not through heroic deeds, or even highly visible actions, but through paying attention, listening, and gestures of genuine care and connection. » ~@BreneBrown
-
I'll just close by saying there is no conspiracy here - any functionality "missing" is not because of some Automattic Agenda, but realities & limitations of WordPress APIs. We do welcome people looking to contribute in *all* ways - including documentation, testing, and design.
-
And they trawl twitter looking for people using the word “TERF” - which they claim is a hate slur, rather than the ancronym it is (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist), and they report in mass, using the blocking tools in the way they seem to be most effective - supporting hate.

It is a silencing technique used on trans women who are pushing back or trying to educate on why TERFs are dehumanizing to them. It’s also an approach used to silence allies from correctly calling this shit what it is. To shut up cis women who would like to say #notmyfeminism.

For people who face more challenges and resistance in public life, taking away online spaces and communities can mean taking away the _only_ space of support and community. Making it harder for allies to express support is also a way to make it harder to know who is safe.
