Yesterday I spoke to insurance—they are going to pay at least some of the thing I have to go to the UK to get. Which... yay should happen in the next month or so? This whole thing has been so SLOW but finally I feel like it’s moving. The builder assured me he’s nearly done, too.

2018 was a brutal year for me. I spent most of the year dealing with a fractured shoulder. I bought a house and gutted it, which was stressful and expensive and is still not finished. Friends came and went - including one who died and who I still miss.

For now maybe I can be proud that... I made so many fucking phone calls. I supported my peers and helped us become more of a team. I went to the gym even when it hurt. I kept buying myself flowers. I unpacked all boxes. I have people who love me who showed up when I needed them.

At work I ended up running FIVE different teams. I left the mobile team to run Jetpack engineering, spent some time on http://Wordpress.com, worked on rolling out Gutenberg (both .com and core) and ended up lead of “devex” which I don’t currently even know how to describe.

People often complain about “lack of vision” which usually means lack of strategy - how does day to day work roll up into proximate objectives that move towards higher level things that are too far from the day to day to be relatable? What does communicating that well look like?

I’m not saying these problems aren’t problems - they are, and pervasive. But building depth on what good looks like helps better critique, work towards better, and/or look for better elsewhere. Personally, I am less stressed by situations I understand (even if I disagree), too.

All the lighting is hue so I create a soft sunset in orange and pink and blue (matching the color scheme of the rooms) each evening, it’s very soothing. I hate bright lights when I’m winding down. The Sonos speakers (2 up 2 down) play music throughout the house at all times.

There is a subset of women, for whom mumsnet (which should perhaps be renamed to TERFsnet) is their online home. These women call themselves “feminists” but they hate trans women. They are transphobic, but far more so about trans women than trans men. They are HATEFUL.

With the previous Woo app, people couldn't login with username+password but had to use a key. This was a horrible UX, which we decided not to replicate in the new ones. We require Jetpack because there is no reasonable mobile Woo UX without a central auth service & notifications.
