  39. Today I called my health insurance and I think I broke the guy I was speaking to by grilling him on the cost of anesthesiologists / their annual salary / hourly rate / length of surgery. Eventually all he could do was repeat “ policies...”

  44. They can’t get their own phone number right on the letter OR email they sent me so not inclined to trust they got anything else right either. They either costed the wrong procedure or for one person to bonk me on the head and another to stick a rusty coat hanger into my shoulder.
  45. Hahaha 🇮🇪
  46. Thanks for sharing that
  47. Today’s on brand hospital moment (I am not the patient), my mom comes back, finds the curtains pulled around the bed. “Why did they draw the curtains?” “For me.” “Why?” “I was crying too much.” Nurse shows up with a cup of tea for me.

  75. Trying this new diet where I spent lots of time in places where I have a hard time eating. Like airports. And hospitals. Today was a day I was in neither a hospital nor an airport. I think in dieting terminology that is a “cheat day”. So I accidentally ate some nuts and now 🤮
  76. Thanks for sharing that 🖤
  77. Thanks so much for sharing that :)
  78. My mom is a retired doctor and given our family adventures in health care lately I have no idea how people without a relative with a medical degree navigate the healthcare system. It’s bonkers.
  79. I often threaten to cry if I don’t get tea and now I know it works* I will be a monster. * at least on british people, test may need to be internationalized.

  102. One of the uncomfortable truths that cis-white women have to accept is that yes we have some real safety concerns, but often the way those get addressed serve to make other marginalized groups _less_ safe. It’s important to be conscious and critical of this.

  104. Hospitals are such a stress test for usability. Woman in the parking lot was having a complete meltdown about the parking payment machines. Cannot imagine she was having a good day aside from that, though, and the machines are terrible. I sympathize.
  105. ? The photo is dated, I know where I was.

  110. So then maybe you say okay, have a very light bar for “not allowed to use this feature anymore”. Who do you think that gets used against more often? People of color almost certainly.
  111. I would use this but a couple of notes on intersectionality: - would dudes be able to use this feature? Potentially v uncomfortable and risky for women drivers. - what about trans women (who may not have been able to change their id). https://x.com/marinaomi/stat/marinaomi/status/1094257241757077504…
  112. So cute hey!
  113. Thank you so much!!

  122. Me: I’ve not been good at food lately because airports and hospitals. Also me: comes home, has no food, eats three tiny apples for dinner at 9pm.
  123. OMG SAME

  131. Time for predictive valentines! Type "Roses are red" and let predictive text finish your poem. (It's free verse.) Mine is: "Roses are red and white and yellow in the essay that I am referring to as the main source for this." Extremely romantic!

  135. Oh yeah.
  136. When we design process we are constrained to design process we ourselves would be successful in. Being good at process means being conscious of and deliberate in breaking those constraints. (This is why you should never let incompetent people near process design.)
  137. To be clear the phones bed is not with me and not actually a bed at all it is a power socket in the kitchen.
  138. YES.
  139. Omg exciting! Go you!

  144. Tfw your friend knows you too well 😂 (It’s probably fine don’t worry especially not you, mom)
  145. Maybe release process is more relevant to your interests? That I don’t have well formed thoughts on :) would love to hear yours.
  146. Then let’s talk about money. There’s a whole book about this called The Richer Sex (I recommend it: https://cate.blog/2014/05/16/book-the-richer-sex/… ) but the tl;dr is that men struggle to be relationships with women who earn more than them. Women struggle less, but some still find that difficult.
  147. Oh. Damn.
  148. 🐮🌎 https://photo.cate.blog/2019/02/%f0%9f%90%ae%f0%9f%8c%8e/…
  149. 🖤
  150. Thanks for sharing that!
  151. It’s fine both the phone and I are going to bed now anyway.
  152. The comments are (quite rightly) calling this out because feminism and family are not orthogonal. BUT there is data that shows that professional success - particularly in academia - for het women makes romantic relationships harder. https://x.com/SpiritedSparr0/SpiritedSparr0w/status/1095528100513878016…
  153. Aha this tweet was a test to see if I had to write an entire article on it ;) but think about hiring / promotion processes, why the same kinds of people advance. But also think about processes for reporting things, such as whether they skew to outcomes or activity.
  154. 🖤
  155. She blocked me already! :) will be interested to know what you find.
  156. Ofc that is a long play; ambitious women who want a (het) relationship/kids in the next 10 years are probably still going to navigate the trade offs. The point is not that it is not _possible_, and not that some women haven’t done it. It’s that not all women think we can. Yet.
  157. Thanks for sharing that!
  158. Yeah same the problem is also avoiding the men who like it _too much_.
  159. Women who date men have far too few healthy models of interdependent relationships. For ambitious women, independence can easily be seen to come at a cost - romantic love. How much of that is a product of society, how much is self-created is up for debate, but the cost is real.
  160. Ironically re:original tweet, feminism is not the cause but the answer to this problem. Freeing women from patriarchal constraints and assumptions frees men from toxic masculinity and allows for het relationships to be more balanced, fair, interdependent rather than codependent.
  161. Thanks for sharing that!
  162. Thanks for sharing that!
  163. Thank you!!
  164. It’s come to this.

  172. Will. Clearly we have not discussed dolphins. I am very serious about how much I hate them.
  173. :)
  174. This does happen to me reasonably often but it’s much better than “did you book a meeting room?” “Is this our meeting room?” “Oh I was at the wrong meeting room” “err do these people know someone has the room booked now?” “Let’s give them a minute then knock” “oh they see us”
  175. Netflix and ill 😷🤒🤧
  176. The time I spent as your team lead was not wasted, then 🖤
  177. Thank you!!
  178. Thank you for the kind comments!
  179. Think of the “two body problem” in academia - a (het) couple where both work in academia, the woman is _much more likely_ to compromise her career for the relationship. The universities she interviews at are much more likely to expect her to.
  180. Thank you 🖤
  181. 🖤
  182. Not sure, it’s a piece by a local artist at the Crawford Gallery. Some kind of ceramic.
  183. :/
  184. :)
  185. Oh thank you so much, I really appreciate that 🖤
  186. It is a problem where powerful women are presented as emasculating of their male spouses, if he is less successful. And if he is on par with or more successful, she is erased.
  187. Hahaha you two.

  200. I don’t like to give life advice but trust me on this: don’t fracture your shoulder. I have spent the past two months dealing with bureaucracy and fighting with health insurance and I may have to move to another fucking country. I can’t even.
