Even before she can read or speak she watches commercials & sees magazine commercials, & though she may never talk about it with people in her life, she is absorbing the idea that her body is not already beautiful, she doesn’t automatically deserve food or love or rest or health.

This article is great, actually offers some hope. In 1994, there was no television on the island of Fiji; there were also no eating disorders. British and American television were brought to the island in 1995. By 1998, 29% of girls had severe eating disorder symptoms. 13% within one month of the introduction of television.

“More, even, than sadness, many of us have been taught to fear rage—our own, as well as others’—because its power can be used as a weapon. _Can_ be. (...) It’s all in how you use it. We don’t want to hurt anyone, and rage is indeed very, very powerful.”

“Certain kinds of connection create energy. When you share mutual trust and “connected knowing” with someone, you co-create energy that renews both people.”

“Like, if you’re hit by a car and don’t die, does _the car_ make you stronger? No. Does injury or disease make you stronger? No. Does suffering alone build character? No. These things leave you more vulnerable to further injury.”
-
“What makes you stronger is whatever happens to you _after_ you survive the thing that didn’t kill you. What makes you stronger is _rest_.”
-
“Rest is, quite simply, when you stop using a part of you that’s used up, work out, damaged, or inflamed, so that it has a chance to renew itself.”
-
“”Rest” doesn’t just mean sleep—although of course slee is essential. Rest also includes switching from one type of activity to another. Mental energy, like stress, has a cycle it runs through, an oscillation from task focus to processing and back to task focus.”
-
“The idea that you can use “grit” or “self-control” to stay focused and productive every minute of every day is not merely incorrect, it is gaslighting, and it is potentially damaging your brain.” 🔥💔😭
-
“An internet meme we like goes “you don’t have to set yourself on fire to lee other people warm.” But according to Human Giver Syndrome you definitely _should_. As “human givers” women live with the expectation that we _give_ every part of our humanity, and our very lives.”
-
“Our time, energy, and attention should go toward someone _else’s_ well-being, not be squandered on our own. What’s the matter with you, you lazy, selfish monster, sleeping seven hours a night? _Get back in line_ with the rest of us exhausted, righteous givers.”
-
“Walking away from a task or a problem doesn’t mean you’re “quitting” or giving up. It means you’re recruiting _all_ your brain’s processes for a particular task—including the capabilities that don’t involve your effortful attention.”
-

After receiving an electric shock and saying they would pay not to experience it again, people were left alone with the electric shock machine. 1/4 of the women and 2/3 of the men gave themselves an electric shock rather than sit there and “just think”. On average, 1-2 in 15m.

Anyway the way up also a trajectory I don’t even know if I’m on most of the time. There is so much stuff I fucked up last year that I am still trying to untangle. And then there is this level of trauma that comes from getting to a place where I had no agency in my own life.
-
Wild it’s so hard to do for myself what is easy to do for, give to others. “Human giver syndrome” omfg. It’s not like other people didn’t see this happening, try to get me to stand up for myself :/ I thought I had to be fine with it all until I just couldn’t be fine anymore.

“Our culture treats you as if “being productive” is the most important measure of your worth, as if you are a consumable good. You are a tube of toothpaste to be squeezed relentlessly until empty. For some people & for some parts of our history this has been explicit and literal”
-
“When you are cruel to yourself, contemptuous and shaming, you only increase the cruelty in the world; when you are kind and compassionate toward yourself, you increase the kindness and compassion in the world.”
-
Instead of asking under indexed folk to “refer your friends” ask them “what would make you enthusiastically tell people this is a great place to work?” If you choose to do “diversity” before “inclusion” that’s up to you, but people know & won’t tap network for diversity theatre.

The mistake people make here (made it!!) is taking things on for the good of the team but in a quiet way. That work either goes unnoticed, or just isn't valued enough - and that's why noone else was doing it. So surface it, make a case for it, show the impact.
-
You care about being a good manager, you spend time making your team look good, making people in it look good, showcasing their work... Some amount of managing up is being your own manager - get clear on context and impact - and doing the work you do for your team for YOURSELF.

When thinking about a stretch goal, a good question is: what level of growth do I have the capacity for? We don’t always have the capacity for high growth. High growth is also high risk. Then you can ask: - what can I do to improve my capacity? - what would reduce the risk?

There is no point when things are just bad and there is no point where things are just good again. The way down was a trajectory - not a straight line. There were still good things and there was still hope. Eventually there wasn’t, ofc, but I wasn’t even sure when it left.

I need to leave this restaurant this is mortifying. The staff keep catching my eye and I feel like they are asking me “is this the normal behavior of your people?”

Managed to swim 3 (very short) lengths of (quite bad) butterfly this evening so I guess it’s true after ~13 months of pain and ~3 months of excruciatingly painful rehab things do get marginally less awful. Yay.

A thing for under-indexed folk is we think we have to take every opportunity because we know we get less, remember all the opportunities we were denied. But feeling obliged to take everything, to always take the hardest/most prestigious thing *denies agency* in a different way.

Okay so making a team functional and happy is not a short term thing and _has_ to support (not undermine) delivery. Often short term approaches here will undermine team functioning down the road. So you have figure out the path, the timeframe, all of it here too.
-
Yesterday’s book oh my god the way it talked around the clearly lesbian couple. WILD! Then another lesbian murdered her girlfriend in a quick unobtrusive way, then disfigured the corpse and faked her own kidnapping.
-
Your job is to define delivering, and set things on a track of improvement. You also need to define the timeframe, the progress markers... all of it. You also need to handle when things don’t go to plan (which they won’t), or fail (which they will).

Personally I take it as a given that all teams/individuals can improve, questions: - what would be most impactful to improve first? - how can we build on our strengths? - what would create disproportionate benefit/happiness? - what will we be glad we invested in 1y from now? …
-
Yeah which was shown to be effective but was also a disproportionate burden on women who worked there. For which they were not recognized or compensated...
-
Is it his own talk? Because I read it as allyship is important here is a resource I haven't looked at for the rest of you. Although I admit I did not click though 🙃
-
oh I see it is his own talk, yeah maybe i'm being too harsh here
-
Slash terrifying 😬😂
-
Yeah. It’s not great, I have this problem right now. There are no good solutions but we can at least be open about when we are asking women to do second shift work.
-
Me programming today: - This seems fine. - This bit is working. - That bit is working. - Oh shit that didn't work actually. - Okay everything is kinda fine individually... - Oh my fucking god what now?!?
-
Come for the raccoons, stay for the existential.
-
Did you know there is a slack for that? https://engmanagers.github.io
-
Me this morning: I will make a stupid camera app. Me at lunchtime: Autolayout you will not defeat me. Me this evening: I will understand all about AVCapture and multiple video outputs or die trying.
-
My friends: you should call your therapist. Me: how can I possibly explain to her that I filled my passport, didn’t notice, got trapped in Thailand, that I took her instructions to do “something fun” as “go to Taiwan” and now I have failed as a person and have no other ideas.
-
Is this why people ask questions before agreeing to things? Anyway it was fine I’m just quite dehydrated and dirty now.
-
Lol it was fine
-
Does this sound like a lot of work? Yes, but it’s your job. Once your manager does not have (cannot have) deep insight into your day to day work who else is going to do this but you? You agree the high level priorities and challenges and then you have to do the fucking work.
-
ANYWAY i am confident the doctor will respond well to “I got this random drug in Thailand maybe i am taking over the recommended dosage please can I have some more” 🤷🏻♀️💁🏻♀️
-
Nothing like having to write a bio to remind you that you have nfi what you're doing with your life.
-
So much love to everyone who has been putting up with my non-humanness hiding in Thailand etc. Most of all @Geek_Manager
-
Today's question: is AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer the answer? Or the problem... 👩🏻💻
-
We need to review the overlap in our bucket list and plan an adventure.

I don’t even recognize myself right now, I spent the day drifting between my favorite haunts here and reading, and I’m now packed. It’s not even 530pm and my flight doesn’t leave until 10am tomorrow!!
-
Although now I have bought a house either I find a new post breakup strategy or never date again 🤷🏻♀️

The Mystery of the Device Orientation and the Image Orientation omfg programming is oscillating between "I am a fucking genius" and "I am a failure as a human being" through moments of "I am cautiously hopeful" 🤓😅😭
-
Haha I don't have much patience but Twitter is a good output for my irritation ;)
-
Lunchtime: OK I have a minor image orientation issue... After lunch: Why is there no light on the main camera? Well I'll fix the orientation first... Hours later: I'm not sure this is a minor image orientation issue 🙈
-
Omg omg omg omg omg they CHIRP the cutest I can’t even 😍🥰😭

Yes we are FULL OF EGO. Like seriously if I’m paying my own travel I’m taking a fucking vacation not doing unpaid labor. I’m so EGOTISTICAL like that!!
-
Unpopular opinion: d&i work is 80% logistics and bullshit.
-
Aha I relate so hard 😭
-
Omg that is some bullshit.
-
Haha yeah that’s what I meant, there was a thing that was like “oh we need to understand what went wrong here” and I was like “I believe I told you so, here’s a reminder of why, here’s where I documented it”
-
Appreciate this thoughtful post on licenses, open development and the implications thereof by @steveklabnik - What comes after "open source" https://buff.ly/2YJoi4T /via @alilleybrinker

Right! I had this transition at the start of the year from operating through authority to with influence and it has been _super_ different in some ways, very similar in others.

Tired: buying a ceramic elephant Wired: driving out of town for 40 minutes to some kind of artist commune, and buying three ceramic owls (And two owl pictures...)
-
Okay do I check a second bag for the art or do I mail it to myself? This is #cateproblems and tomorrow is my last day here so I need to decide... Will be unpacking into three piles: laundry, things to be put away, and things to be taken to the framing shop.

Super thoughtful, and great results - @recursecenter

Omg yay!! They are so lucky to have you joining them!!

The two main goals of onboarding are: - a sense of accomplishment - a sense of belonging Yada yada process whatever. This is what’s important.
-
I am all logged off slack etc (vacay) & my team is running this senior women user research without me but little bits of it making its way to me make me so excited. I think we are going to learn _so much_ from it & I’m so glad to work somewhere we can share that publicly, too.
-
ICYMI - really excited about the research project my team is running to better understand how women/NB people approach looking for software development jobs. There’s so much opinion out there that can be hard to sift through, and we all being so much bias https://cate.blog/2019/05/15/addressing-hiring-gaps-through-user-research/…

You are both adorable!! 🖤

I think it’s good I’m leaving tomorrow because it’s been over a month since I had a real conversation with another human and I’m starting to get quite lonely 😭

I fucking _hate_ conversations about intentions it means we never talk about _harm_. Like if I don't think someone intends better I'm probably not even talking to them.

I just checked out of the hotel I've been living in for the last month and they took a picture with me and gave me a gift 😭 omg they are so nice.
-
Being able to work publicly within a community - understand and navigate community norms, deal with potentially difficult and unconstructive feedback, give useful feedback and support to people with less expertise who are often just trying to make their living.
-
It’s funny because I prefer to work with people who aren’t exploitative, gaslighting assholes! I’m so unreasonable and unhumble like that.

Related to this, key skill to develop: - document - step back & do great work elsewhere - let things fail If people aren’t ready to admit something is wrong, there’s no credit for managing the impact of failure, & you won’t get what you need to succeed. https://x.com/jessfraz/status/1133161814903197696?s=21…

Yay I am in!!!!
-
There is some deep irony here because I did a bunch of elaborate stuff to make sure I wouldn’t get locked out 😭
-
Except I have no “peanut” which I assume is a cat but could be a raccoon.

The elaborate precautions were about never having to have or rely on a physical key on my person but it turns out locks can just randomly stop working what fresh hell is this?!?
