I've spent the last ~16 months working on “developer experience”, overhauling the hiring process to make it scalable, learning how to hire recruiters, and also trying to build out more and better support for team leads. It's been intense and exhausting and I've learned so much.

Another thing, the Irish government decided to: - actively try and take care of people in long term residential care - accurately report on those numbers - list deaths as Covid even if the person had co-morbidities Even death rates are influence by policy and not comparable.

Good news from Ireland: - we have capacity for 12K tests a day, only 3.5% of which are coming back positive. - tourist accommodation is being used to house homeless people, including quarantining or cocooning those sick or at risk. This is moving some out of homelessness.

Totally agree. It’s fine to have to look the odd thing up, we all do, but if when you are programming you are both thinking about how to solve it AND how to write it down, you’re going to have a hard time. This will show up in technical interviews, but far from only there.

Everything that is playing out is the long term inequity - women make less money, and are held (and then push on each other) higher standards. Also, taking care of children is exhausting. For most women it's not an option to just not be able to do it, but for men it seems to be.

In Ireland tax as a contractor comprable to as an employee, can write off slightly more so probably will be a net win. Health insurance and accountant each ~150€/m. Given remote co’s pay closer to US salaries (higher than EU), the hassle & lack of benefits is worthwhile.

In some countries being a contractor rather than an employee is a win for tax (less than as an employee). In others, it’s higher. It often excludes people from certain benefits, like whether contractors are eligable for Covid benefits in some euro countries is an open question.
