2020 has been such a grind in so many ways and steroids are making me feel like I’m constantly vibrating, but some long standing life admin projects are reaching their final stages and ooooh that feels good.

Something I am thinking about is how we have periods of expansion and periods of consolidation where we get everything is in order. After long periods of intense expansion, I really needed a period of consolation. It turns out there is a level of contentment to being organized.
-
And now I am excited to just... be free of that cognitive load? The someday maybe life admin projects that feel most pressing at the times I have least capacity? Everything is coherent, everything is in a good enough place, decisions are easier etc etc.

skamille I find that pretty wearing & US-centric. sure some people have been complete dipshits (there was a dude in Ireland who didn’t quarantine after travel who infected 56 people) but some people getting some modicum of normal life back isn’t a crime - especially with a competent gvt.
-
willmanduffy skamille It’s a wholly different experience I can’t quite explain. But the effect for me is that I live within whatever the current rules are, with minimal anxiety, and I know if I get sick I get health care.
-
willmanduffy skamille Like the other week I called the out of hours service because I had a fever. 8pm Saturday: quick triage by nurse/doc over phone ~30 mins maybe? With gaps between calls. 1045 am Sunday: Covid test 4pm Monday: negative test result
-
willmanduffy skamille We’ve been in lockdown for ~3 weeks which sucks, constrained to a 5km radius. But in a county of ~6.5m we are at 300-400 cases per day, and we will be released again when we are back to the 50-100 range, plan is December 1.
-
willmanduffy skamille Whilst I worry about small businesses in this time (shop local!) there’s a pandemic payment of ~350 euro a week for everyone effected. It’s not a huge amount, but people are able to get buy and banks are under pressure to accommodate.
-
willmanduffy skamille IMO a huge part of the problem in the US (& the UK and elsewhere) is an individualistic society, & this “YOU are the problem” thing is also that. Collectivist countries (Asia, Ireland has tried to take this approach) understand that addressing a pandemic is largely structural.

ekp We pay people a per assignment fee. I think it can also go the other way, where people value time more than money, and push work onto candidates who are unlikely to be successful.
-
ekp I mean, I know it can go the other way because I’ve seen it. IMO problem with most hiring processes is that too much time is spent on unqualified (white) men. Shifting the process so that time spent on people is proportional to success leads to better candidate exp and outcomes.
-
ekp And I think results in more diverse teams overall. When fixing a hiring process top of the funnel clarification (JD) & calibration are huge levers. The money goes well with that when you use it to communicate to candidates that you value their time. I vastly prefer the flat fee.
-
ekp Yeah I have a pretty replicable process at this point, but starting to think many hiring managers don’t have a clear understanding of what they need and how that maps to a hiring process. Which as always with ambiguity is a bias vector.
-
ekp Yeah 100% and when candidates have to report time spent there is an incentive to understate it, which can then result in those who report accurately being penalized. Also: overhead.

2020 has been the year I finally got through things that I’ve procrastinated on for lengthy periods (like: years). What worked? - acknowledge why it’s hard - focus on why it’s important - create time to do it
-
Acknowledge why it’s hard. Take away the judgement and forgive myself. For me a lot of it was: I struggle with bureaucracy as get very stressed by it, sometimes something big (buying a house, navigating healthcare) sucked up all my energy for it, and other things get behind.
-
Focus on why it’s important. Any bureaucratic task is usually a little bit meaningless, but if it’s totally meaningless why do it. Instead of focusing on the task, I focus on the bigger goal, so it’s not “navigate X” but rather “rationalize my finances” or whatever.
-
Create time to do it. Okay things are “small” but if require disproportionate energy it makes sense to treat them as large. E.g. book a day off work to catch up on insurance claims. If you haven’t done something for 6 months you probably won’t bang it out at 8am one morning.
-
Finally and most important: breaking things up into little manageable pieces and marking off progress. Often these things lag because they depend on other people and require waiting. Making everything explicit helped a lot. More on that: cate.blog/2020/07/22/how-i-offloaded-my-anxiety-to-trello/
-
Both lockdowns I’ve used to make progress on life debt, taking approach that this time is going to suck so I may as well focus on dealing with things so I don’t have to once I can have fun again. It’s been a grind, but life debt is a grind.
-
But overall I feel free-er! And lighter! Maybe basic humaning and life admin shouldn’t be such a challenge but it is for me so I am allowing myself a sense of accomplishment 😆 but everything feels less overwhelming and decisions are easier now I’m on top of things 💖
-
Anyway sharing this in case it’s useful for anyone else overwhelmed by life debt. DMs always open if you want to chat.
