  41. I didn’t really think about the monarchy, just seeing it as an obsolete figurehead / for tourists, but reading Twitter the past few days has convinced me: it needs to be abolished.
  42. …in reply to @catehstn
Growing up in the UK people are discouraged from thinking too much about institutions / learning about history in case it causes them to realize some difficult truths about colonialism.
  43. …in reply to @catehstn
Anyway this illustrates the best of Twitter for me: diverse perspectives that give you something to think about / change your mind.
  44. …in reply to @geekingthething
  45. …in reply to @catehstn
To elaborate on this because I’m joking but also not, in UK education: - I did not have to take geography or history past the age of 14 - not totally sure what was covered before that, WW2? Did a class on st lucia (where colonization was like it was a fun game between 🇬🇧 and 🇫🇷) catehstn/1568539589287059456
  46. …in reply to @catehstn
    - literally cannot pick out more than like 5-10 countries on a map - almost no Anglo people I know can converse in a 2nd language (my family was aberrant and strange here) - no books from POC were assigned reading in school … probably many more things
  47. …in reply to @catehstn
Anyway when you wonder why the British are so fucking oblivious it’s because the system is designed that way. And British people: maybe consider if that system is serving you in 2022 given **gestures** everything.
  48. …in reply to @rgarner
rgarner Does obliviousness change things? Import taxes suggest no 🙈
  49. …in reply to @AndyDavies
  50. …in reply to @rgarner
rgarner I don’t really know but my impression is more there was a shift in the ruling class which didn’t necessarily include people with lane and huge houses / death duties etc. but substantially the same system of oppression remains.

  55. Trying to decide whether to go to Dublin and realized why I always fail to make it to Dublin. I start looking at options, get overwhelmed, fail to book anything.
  56. …in reply to @catehstn
This is probably also why during the four years I lived in Canada I only made it to Toronto once.
  57. …in reply to @catehstn
I am so terrible at these kind of decisions it's absurd.
  58. …in reply to @catehstn
The irony that I have time to go to Dublin this week because I went to north Korea. But it was easier for me to plan and get to north Korea than a place a three hour train ride away.
  59. …in reply to @ALadyJewel
ALadyJewel I and a travel agent! He ran my life before the pandemic but then retired during it. But he wouldn't plan this thing typically (too small).
