As someone who worked on G+ a long time ago, I have some thoughts on this whole moot thing.
-
The PM used to show a picture of the "mobile team", all men, mostly white, on their phones and joke "yes we're social".
-
To me this seemed like a risk, that missed so many points. But that was during Phase 1: the idea that technical superiority would win.
-
We know that didn't work, but the surprise is that anyone thought it would.
-
Phase 2 was this idea of social as infrastructure. But being "social" is not infrastructure, it is fundamental to being human.
-
(Note: infrastructure, technical superiority - both things that Google thinks they understand).
-
This I guess is some indication of a 3rd phase, which recognises communities are made of humans.
-
And maybe also recognises that data is insufficient. Data tells you what, not why. You can A/B test shades of blue, not so much humanity.
-
And I guess they still DGAF whether that community is welcoming to women, minorities, but then... why start now?
