What the actual fuck. msfionatay/755890699149508608

The problem with the pipeline is that work is unpaid and it is full of broken glass.
-
Look, if your answer to systematic discrimination is to ask those who are discriminated against for unpaid work you are the biggest problem.
-
Also I find the carrot that is basically "maybe if you do enough free work we will help you get an actual paid job" disgusting.
-
I worked for a brand, and yeah it builds your resume. I understand why uni kids want it. But to pretend this will help them get it - BS.
-
The thing I saw at the conglomerate that made me most sick was hiring uni girls in diversity programs, but not giving them jobs on grad.
-
Some of them had never interned anywhere else, and then final rejection - totally crushed, didn't have really any other work experience.
-
And of course often they had super inept mentors who did not set them up to succeed, which is a whole other topic.
-
Anyway my point is: some days I wish pipeline programs were just ineffective. I think they are often actually harmful.
-
And students get all this stuff and think it means something and that they will be better off when they graduate for it... But often aren't.
-
Unsolicited advice for students: take what you can, but don't think it means shit. Also don't work for for profit companies for free.
