"For men, the personal bag gradually fell into disuse with the arrival of pockets in men's closing during the seventeenth century."
-
WHEN ARE POCKETS ARRIVING IN WOMEN'S CLOTHING?!?
-
"In the 18th century a woman's letter case often included a small pocket notebook in which she could make notes on the latest scandals, …"
-
"… clothes and hair fashions, her lovers, poems, illnesses, recipes and the like."
-
"During 19th century women's clothing gradually came to have more inside pockets, but tie pockets remained in use until the 20th century."
-
People, the next time you chastise women about impatience remember WOMEN LIVED FOR TWO CENTURIES WITHOUT GODDAMN POCKETS!!!!
-
Don't mind me I'm just in a museum having a meltdown about POCKETS.
-
"During 17th century, men's clothing was fitted with inside pockets. As a result, handbag… gradually became item used exclusively by women."
-
I came here to indulge affection for fashion; instead I'n in a rage about how trends conspired to mean women always need to Carry A Thing.
-
Meanwhile we mock women for buying designer bags like it's ridiculous and not like bags themselves were pushed on us by the Patriarchy.
-
If you always have to carry SOMETHING then it may as well be adorable. But imagine if we didn't always have to. IMAGINE!!
-
If you're a woman & you buy a new evening dress, you also need appropriate accessories. Men can make do with black/brown shoes and POCKETS.
-
Unless you wear black all the time (my personal preference).
-
But seriously every wedding (where this is not an option), most women are badly accessorized and it's because it is non-trivial & EXPENSIVE.
-
So by the way don't shame women for having strong color schemes. If spend >300 usd each on bag / shoes it's good if they MATCH MORE THINGS.
-
Think about ALL the things we shame women for which are about the cost / need for accessories. Carrying them. Wearing "too much X", luggage.
-
"As travel by train and other modes of transport increased, travel bags became symbolic of the traveling man."
-
"In 1985, Prada was first couture brand to show a backpack - in the form of a black nylon model - as a fashion accessory on the catwalk."
-
"The backpack, which used to be carried mostly by hikers, travellers and soldiers, is now popular among large groups of men."
-
Can we take a moment to talk about how most travel gear porn is by men for men? And how hard it is to find practical feminine travel gear?
-
There is ONE brand I will buy suitcases from. Because I can get fun colors, and they are durable. But like "fun" not feminine.
-
Anything targeted at women is invariably not durable. Think about the underpowered pink computer - but it applies to EVERYTHING.
-
There's a men's sports bag in here. Why are they always bigger? I need more shit to work out let alone make myself look "presentable" after.
-
"Need to carry items to work has probably been the most important reason for men to carry bags." Well what WOULD we know about that, ladies?
-
"The key factor in designing a work bag is it's intended use. A fisherman's bag will have to withstand all kinds of weather conditions..."
-
"... and a doctor's bag will have to contain all kinds of medical instruments."
-
"But doctor's certainly weren't the only ones to use this bag. Was often carried by working men & was a practical bag to take on a journey."
-
"David Beckham, for example, takes his Louis Vuitton bag to the gym."
-
"The only kind of bad worn exclusively by men is the Scottish sporran: a bag worn with a kilt."
