    TIL there are actually three Panama canals (sets of gates). If you look closely, you will see a boat in each of them.

      The front two are the originals, opened in 1914 (holy shit). The one in the distance is the new one opened last year. Nearly 2x as wide.

        Originally the French tried to build this (after the success of the Suez canal) but after 20 years they gave up. The size of it!! Immense.

          After Panama deflated independence from the Gran Colombia, signed deal with US (1904). Deal in 1977 to turn over to Panama - by 1999.
