  1. Omg this is amazing 🖤🦝
  2. Never a good day to wake up covered in blood but the morning after you get out of hospital is particularly alarming. (Thankfully it was just a nose bleed.) Seriously, surgery fucked me up. Even tho it went “well”. Just did another round of exercises and randomly bled some more.
  3. Okay so I deactivated twitter whilst I was in 🏥 but it somehow reactivated itself so I guess y’all can know 1) I survived 2) made it out of the 🏥
  4. Wow a lot of people faved my estate planning. https://x.com/dantoml/status/dantoml/status/1101614796183666688…
  5. Didn’t think I should be tweeting on anesthetic the WhatsApp messages were bad enough tbh. Got a text yesterday from someone wracked with guilt he hadn’t managed to buy me a balloon I had no recollection of asking for.
  6. Thank you!
  7. 1. Listen 1a) particularly to what they learned from a situation before giving them feedback 2. Give feedback, both affirming and constructive. 3. Notice how they are / make them feel seen. 4. Give them opportunities and ask for what support they need to feel good about it.
  8. How to be more likable on dates and job interviews — https://qz.com/work/1389200/how-to-be-more-likable-on-dates-and-job-interviews/…
  9. I had both physiotherapy and therapy therapy today and now I think I am ded 😭😴
  10. This is such a great and helpful interview with @skamille
  11. walked across cork city centre with it, hard to capture the experience as super windy 🌬 thankfully I did not take @chrisb33
  12. Loved this interview with @skamille
  13. So great from @clairejlew
  14. New friend 😍🦝
  15. This is fascinating, and such a great way to visualize cities and growth - Population Mountains https://pudding.cool/2018/12/3d-cities-story/…
  16. Ooh and this one has a card but no name 😂 isn’t it adorable? I will hang it in my office!! Please tell me if you sent it!
  17. Omg only @Geek_Manager
  18. Now this arrived (also with no name...) 😂🦝
  19. One of my favorite tea pots broke today but it had a good run and visited many countries and tomorrow I have a motivating reason to leave the house and also I get to buy a new tea pot.
  20. Incredible story, @operaqueenie
  21. Heavily medicated, covered in ice and feeling angsty and fragile. Send me reasons to be optimistic? Good news in general, anything specifically good in your life... failing that... raccoons. 🤕💊😭🦝
  22. Look at these gorgeous flowers my friend Sophie sent me 🥰 orange lillies! Perfect colours for my kitchen 🖤
  23. Wild I’ve been a manager long enough to have people who used to report to me where we still talk & who still value my opinion even though we have both moved on. Reminds me of @marcprecipice’s “what do you make as a manager” - trust, relationships, careers (both yours and theirs).
  24. 🖤🦝🖤🦝🖤🦝🖤🦝🖤 thank youuuuuuu 🖤🦝🖤🦝🖤🦝🖤🦝🖤
  25. That’s awesome!!
  26. :( you must be exhausted 🖤
  27. Now this arrived (which ofc I love, so perfectly on brand 🦝) but it doesn’t say who it’s from!! If it was you please tell me 🖤
  28. Had stitches out yesterday and so grateful for the nurse who looked at my emotional state not just physical one, and summoned a doctor to change up the painkillers I’m on 🖤 feeling less like I’m losing my mind today 🤕😭
  29. Told @JillWetzler
  30. More co-opting work without credit for me, but it’s not just the act but the rank hypocrisy that makes me a ball of rage. Admire your diplomacy and hope these people will do the right thing!!
  31. Hella sick from painkillers today but received three gorgeous flower deliveries (one with a balloooooooon 🎈) and an amazing coffee table art book. Having people who love you and make an effort helps at least as much as codeine 💊🖤🥰💐
  32. This is a great article and 💯 true - Sponsors Need to Stop Acting Like Mentors https://hbr.org/2019/02/sponsors-need-to-stop-acting-like-mentors… /by @skamille
  33. Omg it’s a proud moment
  34. Oh that is a cool dress!
  35. Urgh 💯 been _deeply_ irritated in a similar vein lately. I’m sorry you have to deal with that.
  36. Hahaha yes Chrissy sent them to me, apparently when I was still out of it after surgery I really wanted a balloon 🎈 and he knows I love 🦝 🖤
  37. 😂 If Screen Product Designers Designed Physical Products https://thedesignteam.io/if-screen-product-designers-designed-physical-products-10cdd3ac4fdc…
  38. Meri and @ellywilliams
  39. My friend (at the time presenting male) gets informally told she’s getting a top rating... Then she transitions, takes time off for surgery and now... Middle rating. THIS IS HOW BIAS WORKS, and it is so fucking basic to check. But no one does.
  40. Time off after surgery is like... sleep a lot and generally take care of yourself and learn how to be a human again? It’s weird.
  41. Anyway this is super hard and sometimes I have to at least calm down a bit to start. But - whilst I am still an anxious person, this has allowed me to generate a lot more progress and positive things around me that are not a distraction but rather an amelioration.
  42. After asking me if I know how to break an egg (yes) @dantoml
  43. Actually managed to write some coherent sentences yesterday so maybe today I will manage to turn one of the many drafts I have into am actual blog post.
  44. Idk the hospital was p nice and anything is okay given enough morphine.
  45. What’s the dumbest thing you got in trouble for in school
  46. The colors are vibrant which is maybe unusual for a bedroom but vibrant colors aren’t as vibrant in dim light anyway, and I wanted to create a space where I would wake up surrounded by beauty and excited for the day.
  47. Seems about right for _reporting_... HR is not a friend there.
  48. Several weeks ago I had this cognitive capacity and inspiration and wrote an epic blog post... but later that day I booked a plane, spent the next two weeks in and out of hospital watching someone I loved very much pass away. And then you know, in hospital myself not long after.
  49. Hella anxious about heading back to work next week after nearly three weeks out sick. There’s something about spending a good amount of time unconscious that really helps disconnect... Taking tips for re-entry but also reassurance that this is normal and in general 😭
  50. I forgot to take a round of painkillers and eat dinner today but I did do cardio AND physio AND swim AND submit a draft to my editor so I’m giving myself a gold star anyway ⭐️
  51. Been thinking more and more lately that management in a distributed context is ~25% community management. Particularly in how information is gathered and spread, decisions socialized etc. It relies a lot more on writing and patience whereas offices index higher on charisma.
  52. This year has been hell, basically. And it’s still only q1... only up from here? Who can tell.
  53. Anxious about rehab? I do the exercises, or buy a heat pack or whatever, track progress (like how many laps of front crawl) and do something I didn’t do yesterday (like today I started doing kettle bells again 💪).
  54. This is part of why I love distributed engineering teams btw, I went from managing a ~6 person team at a failing startup to ~24 people and managing managers in a year. My community work was at least as helpful as my management experience.
  55. Measuring progress in lengths of front crawl. Today: 8 🏊🏻‍♀️
  56. “I’ve been in a taxi in Medellin, your driving is not _that_ bad.” Idk if @dantoml
  57. Love this interview with the incomparable @bethanye
  58. SAME, and also to like... accept the things I cannot entirely fix right now, define a unit of progress and then be _patient_ omg.
  59. Since my therapist told me anxiety isn’t an emotion (?!? Who knew ?!?) I’ve been trying to see it as a form of energy and channel it towards actually improving the things that are generating the anxiety instead.
  60. hey friends, what are your favourite gender-neutral ways of addressing people (both individually and as a group)?
  61. Anxious about a person? I try and have a lightweight positive interaction, but otherwise channel the social energy into other people and feel closer to them instead.
  62. In any context being a good manager is at least ~50% being a decent human being. It’s interesting because in offices bad managers hide behind charisma. In a remote context this doesn’t work as well (although some people still try) so mostly they just... hide.
  63. Me: “you can hurt me as much as you want” Physio: “we can’t send you out the door crying” Me: “is that bad for business or bad for me?” Physio, looking at me with an expression of concern, “it’s just bad in general?”
  64. It’s really nice having @dantoml
  65. Tech Twitter: Tell me about a time someone underestimated or dismissed you and what amazing things you’ve gone on to do since then? RT for reach if y’all want a bunch of victory stories 😌💖
  66. The long hangings by the bed are actually Japanese tea towels from Tokyo. This is look two (sheets are the accessory of the bedroom) completed with the gorgeous flower arrangement @sundress
  67. But this style of management is not for everyone. Not everyone enjoys remote (or distributed) work, and not everyone is good at remote management. It requires a higher level of patience, stronger writing skills, more thinking ahead but flexibly (strategy + depth) to keep moving.
  68. Another room is complete! Here is my gorgeous bedroom. The hanging orb I bought in Canada (pretty sure Nova Scotia), and the feature picture is a stunning glass creation called “Venice in love” by Jean-Pierre Weill I bought in Tel Aviv. Oil paintings from Shanghai.
  69. Yeah I like that :) thanks!
  70. Anyway if you have a struggling remote manager or you are a struggling remote manager it’s always worth looking at if the community management aspect is a thing. It’s an adjustment, for sure. Make it actively and you’ll be fine!
  71. I’m glad you’re feeling better 🖤
  72. “I’ve tweeted mostly good things about you. Not about your driving. Or your ability to be an adult.” ~@dantoml
  73. Interview I did with @siddhantgoel
  74. Much higher utility than a Triton. Probably.
  75. oh my god SAME
  76. Still getting feedback on my rebranding 🤔
  77. Uhhhhh I had no plans for that although perhaps that is the horrifying thing I walked past yesterday and absolutely definitely not.
  78. Oh that’s such a nice idea!!
  79. Firstly, lolsob Secondly, linked article was this 😂 https://brides.com/story/how-to-support-your-partner-through-a-career-transition…
  80. I blogged about this a while ago and just grabbed it to send to a friend!!
  81. Came back to >230 slack pings omfg 😱
  82. This is not a well organized thread with a point it’s a collection of random thoughts and that is all I have for now :)
  83. Its standard practise for testing UI code on both iOS and android. Tons of documentation for both (lots of iOS on my blog but maybe dated now).
  84. Apparently I'm all out of fucks because I literally wrote "I’m not here for some white feminist cause of making it possible for white cis-women to fail up at the same rate as men." on an internal blog today 😂
  85. Roaming Reykjavik in search of art all weekend, outdoor sculpture is such a thing. The big one is in the city centre, the small one in a temporary show ~40 mins walk away.
  86. Thanks for all the suggestions y’all. I may go with some skincare. That just felt a bit too... generic? This guy has been such an angel raccoon 🦝 the past few months, I would not have survived without his help and support. So I want him to feel really seen and appreciated 😭🖤
  87. Also been thinking a lot about the difference between operating through influence and operating through control. When you have control it makes sense to start with limiting factors. With influence it makes sense to start where you have bigger levers. Vastly changes strategy.
  88. Repacking my carry on and found the will I wrote on a pile of postits when I went into 🏥 seems like forever ago. Tomorrow I’m finally going on an adventure!! Feels like forever since the last adventure 🇮🇸
  89. The unexpected thing was learning (even more) to see it as my job to be challenged in public. This was true when I was running eng teams, too, but now my job includes being challenged by people I have ~zero connection to other than employer.
  90. I have this hat and a lot of rage 😂
  91. Sun Voyager 🇮🇸 https://photo.cate.blog/2019/03/sun-voyager-%f0%9f%87%ae%f0%9f%87%b8/…
  92. 😂 what even is fortnite?!?
  93. Yeah I was also torn. Because I saw lots of things tweeted about it that made me go YES and want to know more. But currently not planning to :/ Everyone is imperfect but I don’t agree that everyone is problematic, and I’m not here for “feminism” that excludes trans women.
  94. Omg life goals
  95. “As you know, past Cate was a demon.” @sundress
  96. Did you think the raccoon was a one time thing because I’m thinking the statute of limitations for this is like ~5 years.
  97. I guess that is the kind of thing you write in a card and not in a tweet 🤔 let’s hope he doesn’t read twitter today hahaha 😂
  98. Omg 🐬
  99. Wild to me that the British government says that revoking article 50 in response to public petition undermines democracy. Yet that vote being based on a misinformation campaign, none of which turned out to be true, does not?
  100. No disco No sexism No politics No hate No bullshit No future
  101. Must have been drawn pre-Brexit
  102. There are few things that make me angrier than when people take credit for someone else’s work. So often this happens across power dynamics and axes of marginalization. Wearing and infuriating.
  103. The vastness is bearable only through love 🍋 https://photo.cate.blog/2019/03/the-vastness-is-bearable-only-through-love-%f0%9f%8d%8b/…
  104. I don’t often gamble but when I do it’s on the value of pre-paying for hotel breakfast 🍳🥞
  105. I seem to have lost the first postit which made a provision for the raccoon named Cate @elibud
  106. The people stupid enough to still think Brexit is a good idea now are still going to be pissed off when they lose their job and have to get a visa for their drinking holiday in Spain. We could have as productively held a referendum on whether to colonize the fucking moon.
  107. It’s like a political segfault
  108. Extremely on brand: accidentally booked myself into a hotel inside an art museum. Have not managed to find the art museum. Went to three other art museums today. (Also swam in an outdoor pool so Iceland 🏊🏻‍♀️🇮🇸)
  109. 🦁 https://photo.cate.blog/2019/03/%f0%9f%a6%81/…
  110. Caught the sunrise on the way to the gym this am 🌅 https://photo.cate.blog/2019/03/caught-the-sunrise-on-the-way-to-the-gym-this-am-%f0%9f%8c%85/…
  111. Media: bi as in super slutty Me: what about bi as in equally unsuccessful at dating both men and women tho
  112. Btw so much for Icelandic equality women must go outside to get to the indoor pool. Men do not have to go outside. I was soaking wet and got lost (I know I know but people can get lost in swimming pools) and I thought I was going to DIE OF FROZATION 🏊🏻‍♀️❄️
  113. Which is a bit scary? Because I do not enjoy arguing, especially when people come with little context/assumptions. Within this: sometimes you’re not replying for the person challenging you, but so others see your stance. I think about this a lot in conversations around d&i.
  114. I would mainly use it outside the pool tbqh
  115. I thought I could deal with everything I had to do today and then I realized it involved wearing Real Clothes and everything became much more stressful 😭
  116. I admire your realtalk, fwiw 🖤
  117. This is hard for me because I pride myself on giving good gifts and I have just discovered a huge hole in my expertise.
  118. EU cannot betray 6m people who signed petition to revoke Article 50 : @eucopresident #brexit
  119. I need to buy a dude a gift and I have no idea what to get him and this is causing me inordinate amounts of anxiety. I’m not sure I even know who to ask about this?!? So far suggestions: - beer - spoons WHAT DO I EVEN DO NOW
  120. At the start of the year I took on a broader role across @AutomatticEng
  121. If you think about operating through influence, it’s also worth thinking about how you build influence. What do you need to do to demonstrate credibility, impact, etc. This comes back to strategic comms plan, sure, but also word of mouth. Internal community management, basically.
